Polish prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek has recently announced her intention to take decisive legal action against individuals making criminal threats and defamatory statements linking her to the death of Barbara Skrzypek. Skrzypek, formerly the secretary to Law and Justice (PiS) party leader Jarosław Kaczyński, passed away on March 15, 2025, three days after being questioned by Wrzosek in connection with an investigation into plans for constructing two skyscrapers on a plot owned by the company Srebrna in Warsaw.
In her statement on platform X, Wrzosek addressed the allegations suggesting a causal link between Skrzypek’s death and the interrogation:
isting health issues, may have contributed to her sudden demise.
Wrzosek’s announcement has sparked a wave of reactions, particularly from opposition figures. MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk urged her to “apologize and resign,” while Małgorzata Gosiewska questioned the necessity and conduct of the prolonged interrogation without legal counsel, implying it could have caused significant stress. Jacek Ozdoba, another MEP, labeled Wrzosek’s actions as audacious.
Some commentators have drawn historical parallels, comparing Wrzosek’s threats of legal action to those made by figures like Helena Wolińska and Julia Brystygierowa, notorious for their roles in the Stalinist-era judiciary. Additionally, critics have highlighted Wrzosek’s past statements, suggesting a perceived inconsistency in her adherence to legal principles. For instance, Adam Czarnecki recalled her previous remark: “Unfortunately, this is not the time to strictly adhere to the letter of the law.”
This incident is not Wrzosek’s first encounter with controversy. In November 2021, she reported receiving an alert from Apple indicating a potential cyberattack on her phone by state agencies, possibly involving the Pegasus spyware. Wrzosek stated that the warning suggested she might be targeted due to her professional activities or identity, prompting her to consider legal action and caution others about similar threats.
The unfolding situation underscores the heightened tensions within Poland’s political and judicial spheres, reflecting deep-seated divisions and the challenges facing the country’s legal system.
