Jasmine Paolini complains to umpire as Iga Swiatek call has her in disbelief

Jasmine Paolini did not agree with a tight umpire’s decision when she faced off against Iga Swiatek in the Cincinnati Open final, a match that yielded far less in prize money than Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

The 29-year-old reached the final against Swiatek after a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win over Veronika Kudermetova in the semis. Paolini also defeated American star Coco Gauff, who bowed out of the tournament after falling in the quarterfinals against the scorching Italian.

Paolini advanced to face the world’s No. 3 player. Though she had not beaten Swiatek in each of their last five matchups, Paolini was confident in her ability this time around against the Polish star, issuing a two-word request to Swiatek before their battle.

Once the battle commenced, however, Paolini was quick to express her displeasure with how the match started. After a quick rally between the two stars, Swiatek hit a shot that Paolini believed to be out of play, with the ball not hitting the line, at least from her perspective.

However, the umpire ruled the shot good, which immediately caused Paolini to share her displeasure with the ruling. At one point, the star showed a mark on where she believed the shot landed while also approaching the chair to plead her case.

As she walked backward to her spot, she continually shared words with the umpire, displaying an incredulous look on her face. Upon reaching her designated area, she shook her head and briefly put her hand on her racket before getting into her stance, letting Swiatek know she was ready.
