The East Wing was a historic part of the White House complex, first built in 1902, with a major expansion in 1942.

It housed several offices (including those of the First Lady and her staff), visitor-entrance areas, and the former White House Family Theater.

Inside these walls were decades of White House history — social events, public tours, administrative work, and artifacts tied to the American presidency.

In July 2025, the Trump administration unveiled plans to build a massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom, the White House State Ballroom, attached to the Executive Residence.

Initially, the stated goal was to create “a much larger event space” to host state dinners and large gatherings — with public claims that the project would not disturb the existing building: “near it but not touching it,” and respecting the White House’s historic architecture.The price tag was first announced around US$200 million, funded privately by Trump and unnamed donors.

Despite earlier assurances, work crews began demolition of the East Wing in October 2025. Heavy machinery tore through the façade, windows, and structural elements.
By October 23, 2025, publicly available photos confirmed that the entire East Wing had been demolished, leaving rubble where the historic structure stood.
Satellite imagery obtained afterward shows a clear patch of rubble on the east side of the White House complex — evidence that the wing is gone.
The demolition also removed facilities like the former White House Family Theater, which had existed inside the East Wing.
