ARYNA SABALENKA BACKS SAUDI ARABIA’S WOMEN’S TENNIS INITIATIVES
World number one Aryna Sabalenka has thrown her weight behind Saudi Arabia’s efforts to promote women’s tennis, insisting that the country’s support is “very important” for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, was speaking after competing in the WTA tournament in Riyadh, which marked the first time a WTA event had been held in Saudi Arabia. The tournament was a significant milestone in the WTA’s partnership with Saudi Arabia, which aims to promote women’s tennis in the country.
“I’ve been there a lot and they have passion for sport,” Sabalenka said in an interview with Reuters. “Their help means a lot for us. Their support is very important for the WTA. I think all of us will be very grateful for their support.”
Sabalenka’s comments were echoed by WTA Ventures CEO Martina Storti, who highlighted the benefits of the partnership between the WTA and Saudi Arabia. “Our players are very excited to be in a country where they could be inspirational role models,” Storti said.
“It was fantastic to see Coco Gauff as our champion, playing in a full house in front of boys and girls, men and women of Saudi Arabia, who can look to her as an inspirational figure.”
The partnership between the WTA and Saudi Arabia has sparked controversy in some quarters, with critics accusing the country of using sports events to improve its human rights record. However, Sabalenka and Storti’s comments suggest that the partnership is having a positive impact on women’s tennis in Saudi Arabia.
The WTA has announced plans to hold more events in Saudi Arabia in the future, including a potential Masters/WTA 1000 tournament. Sabalenka’s comments suggest that she is supportive of these plans, and believes that Saudi Arabia’s support is crucial for the growth of women’s tennis.
As the WTA continues to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia, it is clear that the partnership is having a significant impact on women’s tennis in the country. With Sabalenka and other top players throwing their weight behind the initiative, it seems likely that Saudi Arabia will continue to play a major role in promoting women’s tennis in the years to come.
