Watch: Iga Swiatek booed in Indian Wells after smashing ball in ball kid’s direction

Former world No.1 Iga Swiatek was booed off the court after nearly hitting a ball kid in a moment of anger during her loss to teenager Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells.

Andreeva, 17, became the youngest finalist since 2001 with the stunning 7-6 (7-) 1-6 6-3 win over the defending champion, much to the delight of the crowd.

Swiatek was routinely booed during the final set when she clashed with the chair umpire and then smashed a ball in the direction of a ball kid.

The Polish star complained to the chair umpire about apparent movement from the ball kids behind her when she was trying to return Andreeva’s serve.

Moments later, during her own service game, Swiatek was thrown the ball by a ball kid and smashed it back in his direction.

Luckily, the ball missed the ball kid and bounced into the crowd.

A commentator could be heard gasping in disbelief as a replay of the incident was shown, while another said it was “terrible”.
