Messi Farewell Drone Show Draws Boos After Sponsor Logo Appears First
Lionel Messi’s emotional farewell from the Argentina national team was meant to be a night dedicated entirely to one of the greatest footballers in history.
But a planned drone spectacle at the Estadio Monumental briefly left Argentine fans frustrated after the show opened with a sponsor’s logo instead of a direct tribute to the departing captain.
Following Argentina’s 3–0 victory over Benin, more than 85,000 supporters remained inside the stadium to celebrate Messi’s final appearance for the national team. The post-match ceremony included music, fireworks, lights and a large drone display designed to celebrate his remarkable international career.
As fans looked toward the sky expecting to see an image of Messi, the drones initially formed the logo of Sancor Seguros, an insurance company associated with the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
The unexpected commercial display was met with whistles from sections of the crowd, with many supporters clearly expecting the tribute to begin with Messi rather than advertising. Argentine media reported that the sponsor’s appearance quickly became a talking point on social media.
The commercial segment lasted only briefly. The drones eventually transitioned into the tribute that fans had been waiting for, displaying images connected to Messi’s extraordinary career.
Among the visuals were Argentina’s famous No. 10 shirt, the World Cup trophy and representations of Messi celebrating some of his greatest achievements with the national team. The show also included the words “Gracias Leo”, a fitting message for the captain who had finally brought an end to his 21-year international journey.
Despite the awkward opening, the ceremony ultimately became an emotional celebration of Messi’s legacy.
Earlier in the evening, Messi had delivered one final masterclass in an Argentina shirt, scoring a penalty and providing two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3–0. The victory gave the 39-year-old a memorable final night with the national team.
Messi finishes his Argentina career as the country’s most-capped player and leading goalscorer, having represented the national team 208 times and scored 126 goals. He also leaves international football with two Copa América titles and the 2022 FIFA World Cup among his greatest achievements.
For many supporters, the brief appearance of advertising could not overshadow what the night ultimately represented: an emotional goodbye to the man who transformed Argentina’s relationship with its national team.
